First off, if you're doing logo design you should probably be working in illustrator - unless the logo is to be used only in web version. You are going to run into some serious problems down the road if you don't have a vector version of your logo - plus the pen tool is much easier to use and you will end up with a much better product.

Secondly, if you aren't good at creating logos from scratch -try doing so in sections. Select several musical notes that you like and think are very contemporary and recreate them, pick the one that looks the best. Then pick out a treble clef you think fits well and recreate that. It's certainly ok to pull inspiration from other places but to simply recreate something and call it yours isn't real ethical - so i would suggest attacking the logo one piece at a time. I agree with 3ncryptabl3_lick on your two versions of the logo thusfar. They are both also really flat, while gradients and inner/drop shadows don't usually translate well in print logos - they do wonders in creating depth for digital versions of logos - you can have both. Good luck and keep working at it - you'll improve every time.

First rule of professional design: Don't work for your mom. (or anyone who has changed your diapers.) I'm going through this right now for a swimteam t-shirt designed for? you got it, mum. >P

try using colors that are usually associated with the church. That way you have some options.
