Different banner idea
I've been working on a way for smaller (low visit numbers) sites to advertise on my site for a cheap price.
I've designed a banner that is flash and moves to make it attractive for a person to click on. (you have to entertain people, to get them to click)
My question is: would movement in the banner from a mouse over be smarter or make shadow box appear telling where the click will send them?

Yes, I know the links don't work. I'm looking for advice, not pushing sites.
Yes, they do work. I turn them off
Remember this is a test page.

Thats a nice effect but I think I would prefer and actual animated image as a 125x125 advert.

I made one, but it had sticking problems. Won't shrink back to normal size if the mouse went over it quickly. Plus on pics that were with more details, they went blurry when they enlarge.
The other way I could do is make shadow boxes appear when the mouse is on the pic. I think it's a little boring to look at. What do I know?

A little motion in the banner isn't going to make them click, it's just going to alert them to the banner, really. So yeah, I would say a little movement in the banner is a good thing. Not too much though.
As for telling them where the click will take them, well... That's up to you really. Do they all go to the same place? If not it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a mousover event that kicks out a small box with the name of the site or something along those lines.

That's a tough one as there are a few ways to deal with that. One would be to use AS buttons and not MC buttons. Coupled with MC animations and not tweened so use the tween class.

Look into BitmapData(); You can load your images with pixel smoothing so it will look good shrunk or full without the jaggies.

Each box does have it's own link. I just disabled it for now.
I made a mouse over shadow type, which gave a short inf. about where it went to, but the problem I ran in to is giving the banner to somebody and having then place it on their site was a night mare. (Sites with tables and all.)
With flash I can at least <IFrame>. No headaches... LOL
This may be the way to go with this. When I get other things setup. I'll ask people to look and grade.
Thank you for all of your help on this.

Thank you. IE7 has a problem with flash and there is nothing I can do about it. If the pictures look small, refresh and they repair themselves. Also IE7 has a security thing that makes it that people have to click it to make it work.

Corneo, there is a fix for that 'click to activate active x' problem. Hit the livedocs on the adobe site or do a search in google.
In flash all you have to do is publish to Active Content Update - HTTP and then apply the active content update to your html. From there you can copy and past that javascript into your regular page or make that availble along with the .js file to your client.

I would have to agree that motion doesn't necessarily increase the number of click-through viewers, but it does draw attention to it. There is plenty of research and documentation on what is successful with banner ad advertising that I would encourage you to look into. What i've found is that it is more about the relevance of the banner ad embedded within the website than the actual design. For example, a banner ad for Domino's pizza on a Gaming website is going to go over much better than a banner ad for Turbo Tax, because pizza goes along well with video games. In conclusion, I say execute it the way you want and the way that works the best from a programming standpoint and concentrate on placing them where relevant.

I'm in the middle of finishing the pages, but I agree. That decision will be made by he person who purchases the ad spot.

This might just be a personal thing, but you might want to not have icons with breasts when asking for advice. I just happened to check out your link as my wife walked by. I get a WTF are you looking at? I have to click away. You get very little advice.

A little movement is alright, not excessive, then it gets annoying. Please pick right images as well...
It is my personal belief that a attractive non animated banner would do just the trick, if it says wow. I feel non animated banners appeals to be more, I look at it, I get the message. As for animated banners, the person might actually have to wait to get the message, especially if the text is flickering or something.
