make a rounded corner cut out of a shape
Ok lets say i have a rectangle and i want to make a cut out from the middle of it like you would with a cookie cutter on dough. the shape i want to cut out is a rounded rectangle with 8 pixel rounded corners. Now after i cut this shape out of the rectangle, i then want to open a new document window and paste it in there. Can this be done?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers

Well that is a rounded rectangle inside a rectangle but it has nothing to do with what i am trying to accomplish unfortunately. I should clarify that i need to do this with photoshop and i want to cut out a rounded rectangle shape from another shape and then paste this in a new document.
Thanks for trying though.

Photoshop Rounded Corners with the Selection Tool
This is probably the simplest method for getting rounded selections, in photoshop.
1. Simply draw out a rectangular selection with the marquee tool
2. Then goto Select->Modify->Smooth. Then set the radius size depending on how round you want the corners in the selection to be.
select
You aren't limited to just drawing a plain rectangle with the marquee tool, the same technique also works with more complex shapes
******Now this is what i want to do (draw a rectangle marquee inside the rectangle shape and then go to Select>Modify>Smooth. But try it yourself. you will notice the 8pixel radius on the corners is terrible. Its not the same roundness as if you were to look at a rounded rectangle shape. Its almost like it is a half round/straight corner.
If you increase the pixel smoothness you will notice it even more how terrible it gets. its fine for smoothness of say 2-4pixels but anything above that gives bad results.

Just use the rounded rectangle tool in photoshop. :\
Don't bother with any other fancy technique.

You're making a new document, with a section of a photo that's rounded off?
In that case,
In your new document, draw your rectangle.
Copy and past your whole photo on a layer above your rectangle.
Right click your photo layer, and create a clipping mask.

No sorry, basically its like if you have some dough and you take a cookie cutter and place it in the dough, the cookie cutter is a rounded rectangle and i basically want to cut this shape out of the dough and then use the rounded rectangle shape.

Are you sure what I said wasn't what you were looking for?
Did you try it?
Or are you trying to make a rounded rectangle selection?

Draw a rounded rectangle shape,
Then Ctrl+Click the layer.
It should make a Marquee of the Rounded rectangle.

Yes. Simply open a new file and drag the new shape onto it.

Oh, ok then. I see that you said "was", so I'll assume you've found out what you needed to know.

Oh. Well a prog like Illustrator will give you the smoothest edges, but if it's just for the web then I'd use the pen tool or a custom shape, as they use a form of vector. I might also use feathering, not generally though.

Accurate corners can be made and inversely cut using the pen tool. That's what I usually use. But I think there's a way to do it with HTML too, so..
and also I think DaveyBoy made a good post one time about this very thing, you'll have to do a forum search for that.

BTW, I don't know if the rounded rectangle tool work in a vector format like the custom shapes and pen tool or not. I suppose I should find out. It would tell somewhere in the Help/Photoshop Help/Index.
