Me personally. I would see what is selling well in that age group in clothing color and use those colors. Not what the tread is, what they are buying.
Judge the theme by what you are pushing.
I'm redoing a site now which is going after men 35 to 60. The colors seem to be tan, light gray and white. (what they are buying) So those are the colors of the site main page.
That's my 2 cents.

How do you go about researching what they are buying?

If it's a fashion blog, it would mostly contain girly stuffs. So it should have attractive colors.. It will always depend on your target market.

Personally? I go to major department stores and ask. (For guy stuff.) Department managers know what's moving and what's not.

I would advise to look at the web sites of other similar clothing lines and see the color schemes that they are using. they are usually doing massive amounts of market research and are on top of the pulse of the people and their customers.
when I am making a new site for myself or a customer, i always do as much market research as i can, which includes seeing what other companies in the same market segment are doing.

I would definitely need more info than "fashion stuff" to properly understand the targeted market. Sure the age helps, but still not enough. You could be selling Goth clothes or Preppy outfits for all I know and both of those are so far away from eachother that neither colors or design would work well from one to the other.

You could try:
black/pink
pink/dark purple
blue/pink/purple
Or use blue/green those colors usually work for almost anything.
