Whats better PNG or GIF for transparent index buttons?

Hey guys im just wondering what would be better for index buttins?? should I use PNG or GIF? The reasom im asking is becuase everytime I save a GIF file with a transparent back ground using Photoshop CS2 the font goes a little 'rough' but when I save it as a PNG file it saves ok. So im wondering do all browsers read png?? by the way the font im using to is just standard ARIAL so its nothing special... thanks heaps __________________ Danny Australian Business Directory \| Web and Graphic Design Specialist
