How to recreate aurora effect

Hi

I;m designing a webpage and want to create an effect to get something very similar to the Apple nature desktop wallpaper 'Aurora' (attached).

I've had a few attempts but don't really know how to recreate the effect of the light - the stars aren't so much of a problem.

Can anyone help??

I honestly don't know how what tools you could use to go about making something like that but I would've started with some color splashes and motion blurs... It's the focal point that might be trouble but not a difficult one to deal with.

well if i had to do that work id probably have more chance going north and take a picture of a real aurora

we can also make this effects using cloud filter, fiber filter and motion blur... hehe, but I like using brushes and warp it for more great appearance

Just add straight round blurry brush,with same meeting spot at the bottom,add motion blur to it with direction same as the angle of lines,change the opacity of layers,and play with blending modes,softlight,multiply and overlay,at the bottom of the Streaks layer make the gradent with those pink purple colors and thats it.
