You can request from your registrar to protect your whois information, though there is usually a fee.

You can change the info your registrar uses for whois through some hosts but not all. Almost all do offer an option to make your domain "private" meaning that the info is for a general "proxy" company and not your proper info. Bottom line is that depending on your registrar you might be able to change the info but is should be legitimate info or just make it private.

A couple of notes from ICANN:
Quote:
|
"The purpose of the gTLD Whois service is to provide information sufficient to contact a responsible party for a particular gTLD domain name who can resolve, or reliably pass on data to a party who can resolve, issues related to the configuration of the records associated with the domain name within a DNS nameserver."
|
Quote:
3.7.7.1 The Registered Name Holder shall provide to Registrar accurate and reliable contact details and promptly correct and update them during the term of the Registered Name registration, including: the full name, postal address, e-mail address, voice telephone number, and fax number if available of the Registered Name Holder; name of authorized person for contact purposes in the case of an Registered Name Holder that is an organization, association, or corporation; and the data elements listed in Subsections 3.3.1.2, 3.3.1.7 and 3.3.1.8.
3.7.7.2 A Registered Name Holder's willful provision of inaccurate or unreliable information, its willful failure promptly to update information provided to Registrar, or its failure to respond for over fifteen calendar days to inquiries by Registrar concerning the accuracy of contact details associated with the Registered Name Holder's registration shall constitute a material breach of the Registered Name Holder-registrar contract and be a basis for cancellation of the Registered Name registration.

From http://gnso.icann.org/issues/whois-p...-16dec03.shtml (my emphasis)
It's probably best to take advantage of whatever "private" options your registrar makes available to you, rather than putting in bogus information. Literally anyone can petition your registrar to review your whois info, and if it is found to be "inaccurate" or "unreliable", then you could lose the domain.

I don't think so. You really should just pay the fee to hide it if it's that important.

Sunny, the whole point of whois information is to have a contact available in case there are issues with the domain. The rules state that they have to be able to get in touch with a decision-maker regarding the domain using the info stored in the whois databases.
I understand you don't want someone to be able to tell that it is you who have registered the domain, and that is the purpose of the services offered by your registrar to restrict access to the whois info for your domain.
You enter valid contact information, and they keep it private. Someone who is looking to find out who owns your domain will not get that information.
If you use invalid contact information, you could lose the domain. Period. It's really pretty simple.

Always pay and have it hidden. It is never good to not pay a little extra to protect yourself.

I do not recommend this if credibility is important to your business.

A suggestion (though it's a little late...)
If the reason for being protective is because the site's owner is running a home-based business, this is a good reason to grab a P.O. box
