are donations taxable in the uk?

hi,im setting up a website which will have or hopefully have sponsors.i am not in a position to set up as a buisness nor am i looking at huge 'donations'.if i state on my website that sponsors will be featured on front page for a period of 12 months from 'donation' am i required by law to pay tax on it?i simply want to cover hosting costs and a little for myself as what i am doing is in the public interest.i.e if i was to contact a local council asking them if they would be interested in sponsoring my website. hhhhhmm tricky,i look forward to any opinions
