Question Clone Scripts, are they legal?
Hello all, one of my clients is using one of those clone scripts. The one he is using appears to be the freedomain.co.nr clone script. I am not sure if I should pull the plug on his account of not because I don't know if clone scripts are illegal or not.

Does anyone know if they (clone scripts) are legal or illegal?

It depends on the license provided by the original author who constructed this site. What is legal and what is enforceable or worthwhile to enforce is another issue entirely though.

Let me preface by saying that i'm not lawyer.

It does depend whether a clone script is legal.

What you can clone or duplicate is functionality of a website.

For example let's take YouTube. A YouTube clone is meant to act just like YouTube.

That is you can add videos, comment on the videos, create a profile, add friends, etc., etc.

If I created a script that mimiced YouTube I would be fine. No one can hold all rights to functionality.

Where things get illegal is if someone directly copies code from the site so that things look identical to YouTube or use actual YouTube code here and there that is just modified slightly. That is illegal.

As long as the clone script is not copying materials (images, brand names, content, script source) from the original site, it is legal. Let's say you want to make a Google clone, what for will Google sue you? For making a search engine? I don't think so. As long as you keep the images, names, brands outsite copyright infrigment issues, you will be fine.
