Some guyz remove links from my theme
I place footer links in my public themes saying "Design by Swapnil" with a link attached to my name. Some people remove it, how do I combat with these people? I have listed a few sites using my theme without the footer link...

Ah, it's a nuisance when that happens. You'd think people would at least have the courtesy to keep the designer's link in place. As for what to do - there's not really too much you can do. It's not really worth the hassle to chase after one person abusing a free theme, when there's probably hundreds obeying the rules. Name and shame and send him a snotty email if it makes you feel better.

As a Novice, this may not be correct: You could make your footer details an integral part of the public theme somehow, then people might not want to remove it?
Just a suggestion.

Yes, leaving the designers link is the right thing to do, but it really comes down to how your theme is licensed. If you created yours from the WP platform you may very well be dealing with a situation where you did not have restrictions to use it and therefore cannot in turn impose restrictions on others.
Quote:
If it is how many themes are licensed, no wonder they are in deep conflict with WordPress, which is licensed under GNU General Public License (GPL). GPL gives the receiver of the end product every freedom except imposing restriction on others.

It is just the discretion of the end user. If you don't want your link to get removed - encrypt it.

encryption will be the best solution ....you should also have a terms of service statement that users should agree to that states akll the terrms for using your product.

I always include a comment in the script part where they do not really look so much and it says the truth . so if someone really wanted to find where the theme was from they would search all around and find it in the source code.

That might work if only the page displayed did not show the complete un-encrypted footer in the source code.
This is a bad problem, but what is someone to expect when it is "free". Anything free gets abused.

Life is too short to worry about it too much. Just move on and keep making themes, it will all work out in the wash.

If your serious about getting them to put it back up. Send them a real snail mail registered letter saying you will take legal action if they don't. Everyone responds to these. No one wants to go to court.

Encrypting only works for those who don't know much bout PHP.
Just know some will remove and some wont .

Is there any way to hide some kind of conditional statements in the code to say, know if some details of the footer are missing and if so, it breaks the template or disables other stuff? I don't know...
I do that with flash sometimes. I hide conditional statements so if they request the source files and try and change them or use parts of them for other things that don't involve hiring me, they break fast and easy.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. How i see it is that I would rather pump out a lot of designs and hope most people keep my tag.

Yes I agree with antirem. But also, keep a note of who is "seeing you off" and maybe you can return the favour some day.

if some people remove you links, let them do this,
you can't control everyone and can't take legal action against everyone, unless you have a full time legal adviser.
so don't worry abt them, and keep making beautiful themes for public.

Try to contact them first because I don't think court will help because theme for wordpress are also under GNU General Public License (GPL).

Some people do the same with my theme. I do not know what to do. I tried contacting them (no reply) and I tried contacting their host (no reply).
I do not think that there is anything we can do to stop it and punish those who do it. Noone cares.
