There are some really interesting threads of peoples experiences here.

My Q': How can you really stop people from using original material without paying for the privilege? In music, lyrics and poetry, there are the likes of the PRS (Performing Rights Society = UK) who will collect royalties for officially released material: This can then also be used as evidence if someone rips off your stuff. Is there anything similar on the Net of which anyone has any direct experience?

EG: I just asked a forum member if I could copy their avatar: They said it was "off the net, and yes, no problem!" So, I copied it, changed the references to my own, and I'm free to put it on a web-page! (Just an example, it will not be going on my website.)

I am a Novice and I have just started learning htm hell and CSS in my own time, and it strikes me that an expert in such a field could rip off anything they wanted.........or? Am I just being paranoid?

That's the way things go around today. My opinion is that whole that "rights thing" can NOT be controlled in this moment. In USA, piracy problem is mostly related to the internet and it doesn't occupy big market share, but in many countries piracy is bigger that original production and it can't be cleared even from the streets.
