Looking into affiliate marketing

I've never really looked at affiliate marketing - it always seemed like nasty shark-infested territory - but I figure I should be looking to set up a few websites to create a peripheral income, via affiliate payments.

Question is, what sort of *reliable* and non-adult affiliate programs are there around? I wouldn;t be looking for the best payer - just a good long-term investment.

Any pointers of where I should be looking would be much appreciated.

Hi Brian,

Not sure where you got the idea AM was 'nasty shark-infested territory"??? None of ours are adult, RX or casinos. There are lots of good honest programs out there.

All of ours pay on time, are pro-actively managed and parasite-free. Which product categories really depends more on you, your sites and your interest. Take a look and see if any of them seem like a good fit for you and then let me know if you have any questions.

Linda, I think I got what Brian means with 'nasty shark-infested territory' and I think he's a bit right.

If you're doing your own job and eMarketing, there are many alternatives for you. You can always find some undiscovered (well, maybe not undiscovered but say, "not fully infested" ) investment fields. But if you're in AM biz, there is nothing new that you can discover as an affiliate. Same merchants and same networks for everyone. And besides that, shark is not just a metaphor in AM. There are WhenU, Gator, eZula, Aluria and many others. They are *real* sharks. They got big, sharp, scary teeth.

Brian, check CJ(dot)com. It's the biggest (and also most infected with parasites) network. There's also LinkShare and Shareasale. SAS is parasite-free as I know. If you have time, attend to Commission Junction University (CJU) 2004 meeting. It will be held September 19-21 in Santa Barbara. Many important names of AM world seem to be there.

Thanks for the info - going to check some things out now.

As for "shark-infested" - I simply mean there are a lot of pitfalls for the unwary. SEO is shark infested. The publishing industry is shark infested. That's why I want to go carefully.

Well there sure are some parasites and other nasty stuff in this biz, as in any other biz.

By "nasty shark-infested territory" I guess I was afraid somehow that you had the impression that most programs and affiliates were like the Viagra, porn RX and other unsavory spammer type of affiliate programs. There are plenty of those, but there are lots of good honest programs too.

It's not the affiliate merchant ranks, themselves (for the most part), that are "shark invested" or "parasite ridden" ... but the unscrupulous would be "marketers" that make them appear to be such.

Most are established businesses looking to, intelligently, expand their reach.

Either find an affiliate program(s) that appeals to your general audience ... compliments your offerings (whether they are monetary gain based, or otherwise), and track your performance.

I prefer CJ for niches outside the marketing world (the other 99 999/1000ths percent of the Earth's population ..)

Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it (Affiliate Marketing).

Regards,

Mike "Affiliate Marketing gets a thumbs up from me" Merz
