Visible shopping cart or not?

I am re-doing the store on my website. I have done quite well with my current store, but as it has grown I need some new features. I am debating whether or not to have the items in a customers shopping cart and the total $ for those items visible at all times while shopping, or to only have it visible when you ask to see it or at checkout. My fear is that customers may buy more per order if don't see the damage until they check out. Of course it could work in the other direction. Anyone have any experience with this?

hmmm...don't know from a designer standpoint but as a shopper I am going to purchase within my limits regardless of it I see the total as I'm shopping or at the end.

i personally would want to see the items in my cart all the time. even somethiing as simple as Cart (1) $xx.xx would do for me.

As a shopper I like to see the cart for a couple of reasons. First I know if I put something in it more easily (click it to see). Second if I get distracted I can get back to shopping (like at Amazon where I always get distracted). I think stores should alway show the cart amounts, # items, even the items themselves if the design works.

Shop cart will help us a lot. But we should also consider great advertisement strategy.

I prefer not to show it. Somehow, I associate that showing it is part of the template, which looks quite unprofessional (you know, that ugly 3-column template websites start out with).

It really depends on the look I think...

Definitely would recommend showing it. It provides the user info about their cart all the time. Also easy checkout link.

Show it! The more user features you have, the better.
