Does promoting websites off the internet have any effect?
Posters, leaflets etc- worth it or not worth it?

It depends on your service. It could work very well offline as well. I prefer the free t-shirt way.

If you run a website targetted to the population in your area it may help. Business cards I have heard can help a website and promote your image.

Distributing posters or leaflets might help you if you have a website which provides local services like a small website for a Car Service station or something like that. However, if you use this technique, it might be possible that most of them will be torn and hence I wouldn't recommend you to do this. Distributing T-shirts would be a good idea.
Otherwise, the best and the most cost affective way of doing this would be publicity by mouth. Try your best to offer great services and products (if you offer services or products) and make Customers feel better. Offering Commission to Customers to bring more Customers would be the best idea according to me.

Obviously yes. But it wouldn't hurt to be carrying leaflets in my pocket on my way down to the shops either would it?

If your website is to provide local services, offline marketing might help.

Sure why not? Get some bumper stickers made with your website name on them and send them to your members. Get some magnetic signs made and put them on the side of your car or truck. Go to trade shows and hand out business cards.
All of those can help bring traffic to your site.

Yes but it will also depends on what your posters and leaflets will look like. I mean, you should be creative in creating your posters and leaflets. Avoid those spammy-looking, old-fashioned and boring leaflet formats. Be innovative and make sure that you are properly targeting your visitors. For example, if your website is about credit cards, give your leaflets to individuals who are employed, above 21 years old and to those "rich-looking" individuals that you think can afford to have credit cards.
Posters and leaflets will be a big help in your offline promotional campaign and it will be better if your going to use additional strategies. For example, if your website is offering medical/health-related services, you can offer community programs like "free consultations" that will aim to help those unfortunate people within the area of your service. And at the same time, you're enhancing your business reputation. Isn't that nice?
You should also target specific places where you will post your posters and give your leaflets. Targeted places should be somehow related with what your business is all about or else, your effort might be meaningless.
Good luck!

As people have mentioned, it depends on what your market is. Service businesses and local businesses have more of an application. Although products advertised in the right ways could pay dividends as well.
Really, the best offline thing that could happen is if a reporter did some kind of feature on your site or your business. You would get a huge boost of traffic. If that happens, just be prepared for that short lived increase so you can capitalize.

Everything has an effect so surly offline marketing will have some effect on promoting websites but it will do a very little. You should promote online for this.Kind of putting the thing in the right place so that it can work.

Promoting a website offline does not make much sense, whereas promoting a business does, especially if you are offering some kind of local service - you could get add space, as well as distribute leaflets/t-shirts. The actual point of your offline promotion effort needs to be ultimately defined by the kind of your company and the public image you wand this company to enjoy.

It is most certainly an effective strategy (as long as your site has some relevance to your community). I have a fairly new Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan website. I live in the Tampa Bay area. I plan to post ads around town, put them on windshields of cars in parking lots, pass them out in busy places and put a big sticker on the back of my car. Those tactics will certainly get a good amount of targeted traffic for my site.

Kidding you? Huh? What did I say? I think you have misinterpreted me or something. If you're talking about the individuals who are in higher positions, I guess the word " employed" written on my post will do the explanation for that... unless if you were talking about the individuals who are related with politics when you said the phrase " higher position".
Kindly refer to my post once again especially to those words in bold. Thanks.
