I would have to agree with Maxine 25 in that content is king. Why? Because if your website/blog has good content, your job of drawing peoples' attention to it is that much easier. People will want to stick around... more than that, people will want to spread the word for you.

I think one of the best ways to get people going to your site is just by simply blabbing on and on about how cool your site is. Go find people that might be interested and go for it. For example this forum here is a fantastic place to go blabbing about your awesome website. Because you can do it under the guise of asking for help on improving your site.

For example you can say:
Hey, I'm just starting my website out. I think I caught all of the bugs, if you would be so kind as to visit it: [link removed], and see if there is anything that I missed, and let me know about it if you find something I would be very grateful.

Although, expect that to be short lived unless your site is just the next facebook or twitter waiting to happen. Alright maybe that is evil, but it will get some traffic there and people will let you know about problems that your site may have.

If you wants to promote your sites then you should have to make focused on both On Page and Off Page Optimization.
and put banner on big brand sites which give you high traffic.

there are lot of ways to promote youe site. Posting on forums related to your website niche and post relevant information about those there. Blogging is the another good approach for marketing . Social bookmarking and networking sites bring some good traffic to your site and also helps you in promoting it. Also commenting on blogs related to your niche and giving links of your site in your comments wherever it is allowed.
