Advice wanted for marketing this idea

Hi all,

I'm a software developer working as a sort of freelance programmer developing business apps. Lately I've found my passion which is game programming, however it can take a long time as well as be expensive to develop a strong game. It can be even harder to market it such that people pay for it.

So I was thinking of another idea. I.e, I would develop a few smaller games, as java applets so they can be run in the browser. I'll put them on a website, and let users play them for free, while running google adsense/other ads on the side.

Since i love making games and have countless ideas, i can continue to add to the site. The end result will be a site with many games that are unique, never seen before, and are free to play.

What are your thoughts? Any ideas for helping market this, or any advice for me?

Free games if they are good will have a viral effect. I recommend using social media after you get your site up and games running once people visit your website and enjoy it they will more than likely tell others. Gaming forums is another idea.

That will be cool, i love playing online games!

Aside from the Google Adsense, you can also join affiliate programs (game related) so that each time a visitor of yours click that affiliate link you get paid. And oh, placing a chatbox might help you out, because that's where your visitors/players can discuss about each game they've played, or create a page/section where your visitors/players can discuss game related issues.

Here is my advice
1. create a website
2. develop as many games as possible
3. let more people know your site
4. email big-name companies and let them advertise on your site
5. sell your website

Why would I sell it if its making money?
I would rather use the audience and profits to move into creating games of my own.

A brilliant idea to start your earnings online but you still need ways to promote the site. There are many competitors on the web and you need strong strategies to be successful.

You might also consider making games that are advertisng. This way, advertisers will pay you to make games that they can put on their own website and that you will also put on your site.

that's a good idea! I love playing online games too, hope yours are not just 2d, but it's ok if it's 2d, it's just better if it's 3d. Players don't usually play games that has poor animation/graphics, they would immediately think that it's just a cheap and for-kids-only game.
