I'm of the opinion that blog marketing is the way to go.
Email marketing is a minefield. And with constantly changing standards, not to mention losing out to filters, email marketing is one big headache.

I don't understand why people have to classify themselves in such strict platforms. Blog marketing and email marketing aren't mutually exclusive.
Email marketing is something that should be combined with other effective online marketing strategies to produce superior results.
Everything in the world of the Internet has constantly changing standards. Email marketing certainly fits in that mold, but if you follow the accepted best practices that exist you'll see great results.
Study after study after study show that email marketing is the most cost effective to produce new customers and new sales.

You can start here
Some excerpts from that page:
Email generated $15.50 in sales per dollar spent on email marketing campaigns last year, 17% more than direct mail, even though marketers spend 23 times more money on direct mail campaigns than on email, Winterberry Group reports. - Winterberry Group (2005)
Email will maintain about the same leads over direct mail and telemarketing in generated sales this year, when Winterberry estimates that email will generate $16.7 in sales per dollar spent on marketing, compared to $14.6 for direct mail and $9.71 for telemarketing. - Winterberry Group (2005)
Email drove 73% more sales per marketing dollar than did telemarketing, which generated $8.94 per marketing dollar. - Winterberry Group (2005)
Email delivers the highest ROI by an eye-popping margin: a whopping $57.25 for every dollar spent on it in 2005, $7.08 for every dollar spent on print catalogs, and $22.52 for every dollar spent on non-email Internet marketing. - DMA (2005)

I am of the opinion that you must use all marketing resources to drive the traffic. Safelists, traffic exchanges, classified, seo postings, blogs, forums, PCV, PPC everything you can possibly have in your arsenal.

Email marketing can help you in many ways. It can bring you good amount of traffic and sales too. Overall it is successful marketing campaign if it is done in correct manner. To get a good number of responses, the content should be full of useful information to the targeted audience and subject line should be catchy. And the most important thing is, need to reach out targeted audience. Most people prefer to buy email list, but I'd suggest that building your own list will be much more effective.

All a scam - want to see your serps go down the toilet - spam - want to get your IP banned by major hosts - spam - want to have all your email accounts blocked spam.
If you don't know what you're doing don't.
So what is the proper way to email.
setup an untraceable domain with a burnable IP.
Never use any pics, or tracable info in the email or the landing pages.
Buying a good list is very expensive - you'll whine up with lots of Yahoo and free mail accounts if you don't 85% will be blocked before the first 1000 go out.
How many does it take to get you penalized - not as many as you think.
Why do they penalize you - you are a theif - you are stealing the company's bandwidth, you are also risking criminal charges if some countries - they will hunt you down.
only .0001% will follow a link in it.
it's a thing of the past (I got out of the email business in the mid 90's) - died a long time ago - the scammers are still trying to take your money by promoting it. promote that scammer. I have set it up a few times recently for clients because they just had to have it done and believed what they read on the internet. I warned them, but did it the right way (so they weren't hurt), as expected the return on investment is just want you'd expect - 0001% click rate. 10,000,000 spam outs, 1 sale, if they were luckly.
succeedemail - you lie - your are a thief - and you will harm anyone for a few bucks -
Guys I was in the business - this guy hasn't got a clue - If it worked so well - why is he spamming the boards......lol ripoff

Just sending out to purchased leads is a tough business. You should start by thinking a little more long term and just putting an autoresponder form on your site and start collecting your own subscribers who know you. I get about 500 subscribers per day subscribers legitimately to my newsletters and this is where most of the money is made.
It takes longer but just get an account with Getresponse or Aweber, and start building your own list. You will make more money in the long run and it is easier on the nerves.

Email marketing is really just spam. Yes it has a very good ROI, but the fact or the matter is that you are effectively spamming about 95% of the people on your list. Yes, they opted in, but it's because they didn't realize they would be spammed, you tricked them into signing up, or you made them opt in as payment for getting something you were offering for "free."
IMO, email marketing will be a smaller and smaller part of internet business as time goes forward. You can reach a declining percentage of the market this way, but I am a lot more interested in reaching the rest of that market and would rather focus on that.
It does depend on your market, and certain niches may be perfect for email marketing... but before you begin, ask yourself what you think of the countless emails you accidentally "opted in" for over the years and delete out of your mailbox or unsubscribe from on a daily basis. Do you buy things from these? Would you want to buy from a company who reaches you in this way? I sure don't...
