What is the best way to segment your target audience into different types when this is the first time you're creating a product for them?I dont want to assume anything here..I want to be accurate.

It all depends on the product you are trying to sell. Some products are sold to anyone and everyone, others are sold to specific groups. Your question is very generic and thus hard to answer in terms less generic than the question itself.

if it is not a new product, just have a look at its market sector regarding users, competitors, advertising, promotions, etc. it will give you some good ideas.

Ok..let me clarify myself..

I want to be able to divide the people coming to my website in different categories, and target to each of those categories differently.E.g at v7n the target audience would be people interested in making money through the internet, but it further divides its audience into SEOs,Web Designers, and internet markets, and may be a couple more. And it has different forums for all of the people in these categories.(Or at least that is what I think of it)

My question here is,that how can I do that with my audience when this is the first time I'm working with that market?
If there are any more doubts please post here.

well, you can analyse your trafic stats and find out how many people visit you site and what they are looking for.
to know what they are looking for, you can make a small survery on your home page (insert a box with a few questions) trying to collect info from your visitors: interests, needs, preferences, etc. once you have some info about them, you can start categorizing your content to meet your visitors reported preferences or needs.

hope it helps.
