Blog Comment Or Forum Signature - Which is better for building backlinks?
Which is better for building backlinks for your site? Commenting in blogs or posting in forums (just like i'm doing right now:-))? The answer is BOTH! They are both great tools to market your site. You should think of marketing your site like an investment stock. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. There is not ONE best method to market your site.
What you can do is split the time between posting in a forum and posting comments instead of focusing too much on one. If you normally spend one hour posting in a forum, then try half an hour of posting in forums and half an hour posting great comments on other peoples' blogs. Not only are you building backlinks, but you are also networking with people
Post to a few forums in your related niche instead of just focusing on "the best" forum. Imagine that forum ever gets shut down for whatever reason, all your hard work of posting in the forum is gone. Same goes to blogs because you can't expect any blogs to last forever. Your favorite blog can disappear the next day.
Always try different marketing techniques by trying out many ways to build backlinks instead of focusing on just one or two methods.

In addition to this: Most forums have a set of rules and regulations. Be careful and dont violate these rules.

I agree that both are important. However, in most cases I have personally seen that commenting on dofollow blogs provide solid backlinks for your site. There were times when links from my signature in various forums were not seen as backlinks, whereas my comments were always counted.

According to a report i recently read (the report was written by the person behind the socalled "Angela's method"), it's a myth that "You must have “relevant” links in the same niche as your website or they don't count or you will get penalized in some way
by Google."
As an example of this, Angela says:
"You often see "Yellow Page" sites linking to major businesses. Now, you and I, being humans, can understand why a site like that might link to a business' website, but do you really think a Search Engine's algorithm can make that determination? What if there was a "community portal" site that linked to all the businesses in the area? What about directories? What "niche" are they in? Search Engines do not and cannot determine whether all the sites linking to other sites "make sense" (relevant) or not.
The search engines would have to know what is "relevant" and that will take a LOT of human interaction. A site for parents might link to a veterinarian's website because the site has a warning about a certain flea medication being poisonous to children, Yellow Pages websites might link to businesses in the area, the Fire Department's website might link to the PUD (Electric Company) because of a warning about electrical sparks, the Food Bank might link to the local High School because of a huge food drive the kids did...see what I mean? To determine "relevance" would take CONSTANT human interaction on all the TRILLION webpages on the Internet. Many Web 2.0 sites' only "relevance" to anybody is the 'community factor' that they provide. Theme-wise, many of those sites aren't "relevant" to most niches. If you leave out great sites because they are not "relevant" to your niche, you are leaving a lot of money on the table. I'd use them all. :-)"
I've always been under the impression that relevancy was important, but now i'm not so sure anymore..

I would agree that forums are usually better as many blogs are no follow. I would continue to post on blogs however as you still get the benefit of potential traffic if you are posting in a meaningful way.

Blogs post generally goes unattended by the owner of the blogs and there is chances that your comments get deleted with other bunch of spam comments. Forum posts reflect immediately and you've more chances to increase your visibility with your signature links.

I was always told forums were better but avoid simple replies like "great" or "very nice" as these will get marked as spam. So while time consuming, over time they pay off [hopefully]. That said most of my networking as come via blogs due to more transparent nature

Came across this service: http://bit.ly which lets you track your links so you can see how many people click on them.
Havent tried this myself, but maybe some of you have tried this service or something similar?

Yep, I liked the 'egg in one basket' post.
Always good to have variety. It makes good business sense on many levels.
Spend time on both AND other forms of gaining backlinks - slowly but surely.

Both forum signatures and blog commenting can do more than just building your backlinks. They can also help increasing PR (pagerank) and SERPs (search engine results pages).
I've seen some internet marketers say that they start every thread or post in a forum with their major keywords. This is supposed to be very helpful for SERPs when these posts get indexed.
Havent tried it myself, cos i feel it would force me to write something thats not genuine.
