Amazon's Low Commissions

Amazon pays notoriously low commissions, compared with other programs. My current commission "rating" with Amazon is 5%. If I sell 21 items this month, it can go as high as 10%. Commissions form my other affiliate programs pay at least 20%.

I'm assuming that Amazon affiliates make money on volume, due to A's name recognition. That's why I've decided to stay with their program for a year.

I recently bought a license for Associate Engine, one of the third-party programs that allows you to place various kinds of ads for Amazon products on your site. Some of the ads are automatically updated as certain products become more popular than others.

I have to say that Associate Engine provides a number of ingenious ways to generate Amazon affiliate sales. There is also a good O'Reilly book called "Amazon Hacks" which provides even more programs for selling Amazon. For example, there's one that automatically updates product reviews on your web page.

I'm mentioning all this because I'd like to hear from other people who are Amazon affiliates. My main question is: Do you make your money on volume?

Hi, Roy ..

I can't say I've made any significant income from the Amazon AP over the years ... but then again, I've not really gone out of my way to incorporate their links.

That will change, however, when I relaunch ... hopefully soon, as the ability to promote reference material related to content, passively, makes it worthwhile (IMHO).

And that's not even taking into consideration all the other product types they offer.

If nothing else, the broad range of promotable products that directly/indirectly compliment(s) almost any topic, easily weaved into site content, makes it a passive promotion plus for any webmaster.

Regards,

Mike "the major brand association doesn't hurt, either" Merz

I joined Amazon off of a former UFO members website. Paul Chapman I think it was but it may have been Pete Way who is a current member.

Hopefully he gets a cut when I make purchaces.

Or can people get stuff cheaper from Amazon if they don't join off a referal link?

I think A only offers a one day cookie too don't they? That's a hinderance since many people need to shop around or think before buying. They do have the name recognition though, that's for sure.
