Promoting a Classified site...

This is a repost.. I posted in the wrong section b4.

I know this is a tough one.. since there are massive classified sites out there doing a great job, and a bunch of smaller ones as well. I have done lots of creative things to seperate my site from the others, but people still do not trust it enough to post on. I started an affiliate site that pays 40% and a link exchange... still no change. Posting is 100% free .. but not taken advantage of. Does anyone have any ideas?? As far as serps go.. im not in yahoo properly for some reason and google also gives me funny listings...

You have to make people to submit their classified on your website. For this, you have to do something so that people actually visit your website and submit their content. You can do so by running some campaigns, contests or some revenue sharing kind of stuff with your website members

I've heard that classifieds sites focus towards the local audience in the beginning. So you may try posting some posters or placing an ad in print media to get attention from local audience so that they start posting on your classifieds website and start advertising. Afterwards, gradually you may increase your area and concentrate on a larger audience. Good luck. I started off with my free Indian classifieds website that was having a PR0 some time ago. And now I see it has PR1. So just keep working and you will see the results. Takes time though.

The classified market is saturated. It is also low trust - high spam/scam territory for potential visitors. You have picked a very, very tough niche to try and get a piece of the cake in.

Build more content and build more backlinks is one thing you can do.

Yes it is a saturated field, that can still offer some rewards. My classifieds idea was to support the larger classifieds not compete, so when people use it, i wanted them to be able to have a good secondary location to post ads. I do agree with all of your suggestions, and have considered localizing the site , so that I can develop it one city/state at a time. I have no experience in building back links, and will be looking to hire someone to assist me.... appreciate it....
