Please share legitimate link building strategies and tips. Does it make to hire someone to do that? What would be criteria for hiring?

Here are a few of the Linkbuilding tactics I use:

Article Marketing: write articles and submitt them to directories

Forum marketing: Join some topic related forums and include your links in your signatur

Blog Commenting: Comment on releated Blogs (Dont Spamm)

Social Bookmarking

Press Releases: Post free press releases with a backlink to your website

Squidoo und co: You can use many of the social sites like Squidoo, Hub page, MySpace, Blogger Wordpress to post articles with a backlink to your website.

A free service I use to build backlinks to my websites is called The Free Traffic System, you can visit my Blog post about Free Traffic System

Heres a tip... you can target multiple keywords for the same URL

For example

http://www.v7n.com?=cool-forums
and
http://www.v7n.com?=another-target-keyword

And put the anchor text as Cool Forums and Another Target Keyword

Google will even index that entire URL and it resolves fine at the homepage.
Its just a way to mix up your backlinks and target more then just one main keyword for rankings.
