How do you find out the right price of text link ad (s)?

I'd like to find out prices for text link ads as both buyers and sellers. I checked a couple of websites; however, I was unable to evaluate the price of text link ad (s) easily. How do you evaluate the price of text link ad (s)? Are there some parameters we should look at?

Actually no. I was interested in text link ads like ones that http://www.text-link-ads.com/ handles. Some of brokers show different prices, but I don't know exactly how they are pricing text link ads, so I was asking about it ...

I am always just a bit leary about such offers, especially when you don't see the sites that are being referenced. There is a theory in SEO that sites should be relevant or the link doesn't count for much.

Where do they put the link? If it is towards the bottom near the copyright date, it probably won't count for much.

How long have these pages had their PR and will it hold? There is such a thing as stealing PR and with the lack of updates, you could be buying something that has already gone away except you won't know it. There is also such a thing as the "sandbox" where links don't count for much for awhile.

How long do these links last? You simply have to love these ads that don't specify how long they will host your link. Is it a day, a week, a month? If the ads don't stay there for at least 3 months, it could be useless to you.

Then there are the ones that tell you that you will be site-wide on 20,000 pages. These often do not add up to much. Search engines often discount links when every page has the same thing. Sites like Internet.com rotate out links and so search engines don't see the same thing on every page all the time. Therefore, the value of such links goes up.

I prefer the old fashioned way of finding relevant sites and asking for links from them. It takes longer, but it's cheaper and you have a good idea that these links will be there for some time.
