Internet Brand Marketing - How to Create Your Own Powerful Brand on the Internet
Quote:
Learning internet brand marketing is crucial to differentiate your business from others in your niche market. Many of us have this belief that small businesses, and small online businesses for that matter, don't need any branding. We are all too focused on the strategies and the direct response stuff to care about branding. Well, the reality is branding matters.
Let's look at the biggest businesses in the world. They all have a distinct brand. Mercedes is associated with luxury, McDonalds is associated with Ronald McDonald and FedEx is known for popularizing overnight delivery. These are all big, successful businesses, but that doesn't mean small businesses can't brand themselves to gain a competitive advantage as well.

I do agree completely that branding is absolutely crucial to every site and business no matter how small.
I don't agree that looking at a competitors web site colors and making yours a different color scheme really does much for you in terms of building a brand .

It isn't needed for every single online business, but for most I would say that it is true

i think branding online in the past year or two has revolved around creating a unique logo and inventing a new word, eg. squidoo, twitter, etc.
then just promote it until it becomes recognised.
seeing as most useful english word domains have been bought up by people looking to resell at a massive mark-up, the trend of inventing silly names will probably continue for a long time.

Now this is what I call shameless-self-promotion!
Let's break this down:
People have to want what you have. If they're getting it from somewhere else or someone else is offering the same stuff, you better differentiate yourself in some form or fashion. Otherwise, the only clients/customers/followers/fans/whatever you'll have are your co-workers, family, and some friends.
It's not about coming up with some off-the-wall name. That's kind of rediculous. It doesn't matter what you call it if it is awesome.

Brands are formed by their products. Some succeed. Some do not.

I agree with that. However, I would add that there are tons of products out there that are really great but they aren't succeeding because the business/person doesn't know how to brand.

The first step is to find or build something that makes our business different from others. Find out what is your interior benefit that other businesses cannot provide or will find it hard to provide. Be a specialist in something rather than a generalist. When a customer is looking for precise information, they would often prefer to go to a specialist for the answers rather than to a generalist. Someone who specializes in a craft is supposed to know more about it.
The other step you can take is to kind your business aesthetically. By this, I mean building your graphics and logo stand out. If most of your competitor in your industry is using red as their main color for their invention, you can try blue, orange or purple to differentiate your business. The trick is to follow what successful businesses online have done but do the things better. Find out key areas where you can differentiate yourself from your competitors.
