THE guide to free hosting
Once you have found a free host, there are several ways to check the popularity of the host and to see how good they are. These 10 points should help.
- Directory or subdomain? The designer of the site may have options for both. I personally prefer subdomains, ie site.freesite.com as opposed to freesite.com/site/index.html. People remember it more rather than directories. They may even allow you to use a redirect, ie www.tk though this is a redirect, not a DNS server.
- Capabilities? Is it capable of only html and javascripts? Check to see if you can use php, cgi etc...
- Adverts? Does it have textlinks, banners, popups, googleads etc... or does it not have any? (often says No Forced Ads)
- Size? How much can you store? 10-50mb? 100+?
- Bandwidth? Does it have unlimited transfer or is it limited to 100+mb?
- Favours? Does your membership require forum posts or button installed on first or every page of your site? (this is often checked by a web robot, failure to comply can lead to the refusal of service)
- Support? Are the hosts reachable by email, or do they have a support forum or newsletter?
- Server speed? Is it fast? Check other sites hosted by them.
- Downtime? Check reviews or news sections in their forum if they have any
- Finally, get an example site - try this in google or other search engine- This will show some results of sites hosted by site.com, where site.com is the host in question (example)
Other things to be aware of - Check reviews and take note.
