That's the problem. Back when these were first available, they were more expensive than they are now . . .

Even more than that, you had to gamble that the internet would really become mainstream. A lot didn't think it would. (Even more, like me didn't even know it existed back when these were first being registered).

This is a great list, the most expensive domain name i have ever sold was for only $3,500. But that is rare with a 6 letter domain.

I am really surprised how high the sex.com and porn.com went for it would have been really nice to buy a domain like that when the web was brand new then wait a few years and become rich. You are right that was a really interesting article.

Nah, dotcom is still the preferred extension. Simply because it's the first extension people think of when they think of a website. That's never going to change.

hmmm, I read somewhere that America.com sold for 30 Million. My resources must be faulty. I have a friend who purchased freegas.com about five years ago for $9.99. As far as I know, he still owns it but have not done anything with it.

As most of you may already know, there is a legal side to all of this as well. There was a case about ten years ago about a doughnut shop and for the sake of argument it was called daves doughnut shop. Well, one day he decided to register a domain name davesdoughnutshop.com and realized the name was already taken.

To make a long story short, he took the owner of the domain name to court and won, simply because the owner was just sitting on the name and had no use for it except profit.....

Thing may have changed over the past ten years.

REALLY??? I'm NOT... After all, alcohol and sex sell a lot... And if you notice of the top 12, well most are related to three things, Sex, Alcohol and Money!!! Makes us all wonder just what is going through our heads.

I would have to say, Beer.com and pizza.com for me...
