Adsense ?

Is there any way to control the content that is displayed in your adsense box other then just the url filters?

I tried adsense on my site and all that was being displayed are competitors sites.

I was hoping for adsense to display complimenting sites such as fish breeders and aquarium forums and such.

site is same as in sig.

You have a commercial site that sells products. Why do you need Adsense?

I do not currently sell live fish. Some of the fish breeders and resellers use adsense. Same with forums.

I figure since they are selling a product or offering a service that I do not and I think my customers would be interested in their product why not get some paid ads going.

I am currently averaging 5-6k unique visitors a month.

I would ditch the adsense but what you can do is run it for a few days, check the sites that are advertising (don't click, just write them down) and then contact them directly once you've done your research and pulled the ads.

Yep, Rivux offers good advice.

Get some good link partners or even sell some ad space.

I know many sites in various markets which make more doing both than they do one way or the other.

I prefer that the departing visitors generate a little revenue on their way out.

The content on your page determine what ads are displayed as well as the chosen keywords of the advertisers. By filtering urls you may be blocking the highest paying ads.

I'm not sure why you're afraid of displaying competitors ads on your site via AdSense? How long did you have the AdSense ads on your site? Did it affect your overall conversion rate?

I think if you run the ads for a period of time you'll soon realize that it isn't really hurting your conversion rate and you'll be generating some income from the visitors that do leave - which is most of them.

I'm sure some do, I'm just biased. I hate the whole Adsense scheme.

I currently do not have adsense on the site.
Just trying to figure out a way to offset some of the recent adwords cost increases.

I have no real reason to block the competitors ads.
We have very competitive prices. (lowest available in many cases)
Just don't think it would look right having an add from a competitor for the same product(s) on the same page as my product(s).

Isn't there something against showing a competitors price on a product anyway?

Maby I would be better off starting a fish breeder / dealer / aquarium forum directory and attempting to sell some static text/image ad space then running adsense specifically on those pages?

Maby that would provide the results I am after.

Yes you can filter URL's of competitors. Simply go to AdSettings, Filter URL and type in the URL of the competitor that is appearing in the ads on your page.

Oops, sorry, just realised you found the URL filter already. Don't think there is any way since the ads are determined by your keywords. I don't think there is any harm to have competitors being advertised on your site though. Also if you block ads, you may be reducing your potential earnings by blocking high paying ads.
