Save that for corn, tomatoes and grass (No..not that kind Ferre )
what you want to do is get in the inner circle of the auction world, be seen/found when folks search for (what ever your planning on auctioning off on your site)
One thing to think about is your competition...with that being said you have some tough competition that has a lot of money and know how, as far as the Auction world goes.
To be truthful...you don't stand a chance in hell of making that site successful. IMO
with competitors like Ebay.
Your quest falls under the "80,000 links" topic...it's unrealistic that your auction site will succeed.
But good luck on your quest.

Specialize!

Ebay started with PEZ dispensers.
What do you have a passion for?
You have to start somewhere why not with something you like.

I don`t agree with sundancerz. Things might be pretty tough in Auctions field, but it doesn`t means you don`t stand a chance. Every field has an Ebay like giant competiting with you.

My suggestion is start from a niche market, for eg. Auctions for teens, or Auctions for a particular area or city.. and concentrate on that theme, and gradually start expanding your circle. This will take time, effort, money and your passion.

Make a clear budget for your advertising, offers some good deals for your customers.
Get some good banners or links on community sites where you sthink people might be interested in you.

Yes, specialize!

Just about every internet company that quickly comes to mind started out small and niched (of course when most of them started out there was no competition -google being the exception).

Pick something that you are or can be an authority on.
