Well, define "sell".
In order to get money (profit) you must sell something.

Amazon.com sells something.
Does Google sell anything? (as far as i am concerned, they do. I have their charge on my CC statement every month

So my guess question should be like that
What kind of staff is more profitable to sell?

1. Goods
2. Adds.
3. Links
4. Can not come up with anything else.

1. My guess the answer is Links but it's a less stable one. You will not get a lot but you pretty much getting money without doing anything. So if your site happens to have High PR then by selling links you are getting extra money. Until goggle bans you. hahaha.

2. Then goes "Adds" (AdSence for example). That one i think more profitable than links but you need to work hard all the time to get decent traffic. And more money of course.

3. Goods. The most stable one. Bunch of stores do not have even websites and doing good. But it requires much more work and initial investment.

Google offers services for a fee. They don't really sell anything.

I would have to say the following are probably the most profitable:
  • porn (take photos or make videos pay the model(s) and make $$ off every download/subscription)
  • casino/gambling sites (create gambling site and sell subscription and % off transactions)
  • travel (buy in bulk or make special arrangements with airlines, cruises, hotels, etc then upsell)
  • software (create software once and make $$ of each copy sold)
  • Music Subscription (monthly subscriptions to various type of music. Pay minimal royalties to record companies)

No-ones mentioned Ebay yet, they don't sell anything as such and are making a fortune, just a service aren't they, put sellers and buyers in touch with each other, how simple is that?
Porn too, that must be hugely profitable.

how exactly does Mr F Reunited make money, is it simply selling advertising space? How much do you think that is worth, I wouldn't have a clue!
I suppose he does charge a small registration fee as well.
I think the most profitable sites really have to be those that require the least man hours to perform.

Focus on Niche Sites. Avoid Heavy Competition

Sim,

What imaginemn said is right in the sense that those are the largest industries on the web. But the problem with those industries is that trying to build a site and compete in them requires lots of up front cash/capital. Its is hard to build a travel site and compete with Expedia or a music site and compete with Emusic.com or Mp3.com

The best way to approach the web in my opinion is to find specific niches in a major category that have demand, but little competition. That way, you can use certain keywords that get you the top position in the search engines.

I would agree with telsa to some degree but, if you think about this.

If you wanted to start a travel compay, the point would not be to compete with Expedia, Orbitz or Travelocity but to get a small piece of their pie. This is a billion dollar industry. If you could just put a small dent let's say 1% of what they make you could potentially make $10,000,000.00/yr.

That's pretty good IMO.

As long as were thinking about it...lets continue a little further, I wouldn't suggest starting a business like Travel unless you know how the Travel industry works, just starting a web site to get into the Travel industry is in sane. You have to know about the business your going to start, the in's and out's of the industry and then use a web presents to complement the business you've started, I wouldn't try and start a site and expect it to become a business with-in an Industry that I know nothing about.

What do you know? how can you make a site that adds to what you know?
That's what I would think about.

Some good points. I know this person who knows nothing about travel and cruise. He hired a few sales people started a little cruise site and in less than a year he has made 8 million in profit this year alone and is in the process of selling his company for a ridiculous amount and plans on starting another one. I believe this is his second or third company he has built from the ground up and sold for profit. And not all of them have been travel related. He and his team are great at sales and have never been in the business of travel. Due to a NDR I cannot disclose more than that, so please don't ask who it is.

If you are determined, do your research and work really hard and willing to spend some serious money you can pretty much turn any company into a huge success. You just need to define what you consider is a success. Is the goal to make $$$ a year, have X amount of clients a year, etc.

I agree with imaginemn. Nowdays you can learn about anything from internet.

I have a body piercing jewelry site.
Guess how many piercings or tattoos i have?
None.
Unfortunatelly we/you have to sell what others buy and not what you want

I think cars and real estate sites are also huge.

Someone was saying that online pharmacy type sites are making their one or two man operator owners 90 to 100 K per month.

friendsreunited makes money by charging you to join the service (5 pounds sterling). You can then make contact with your ex school mates.
Many of these types of sites are springing up everywhere, so must be something in it!!

The guys who originally set up the business from a bedroom sold it for around £25m ($40m). The key to its power was the fact they had around 8m members subscribed, thats a big power base to sell other things to!!

travel
online dating
porn
gaming
pills

I also think it is possible to start a profitable site from 0 industry knowledge. if you still feel you need to brush up go and get a job at a local travel agent. I bet it is supper easy to get a job you dont actually need. think, other applicants would be all stressed out and the interview would mean next to nothing to you, so no stress and better interview results
