Adsense & directories does it work?
Hi guys,
I am sure some of you have a directory....I just started one
All-Blogs.net
How did you integrate Adsense?
Is it worth it or are you only offering paid links???
How do you make money with your directory???
Cheers

Adsense will work best with any sites, conditions you get a decent traffic. If you have good traffic then you can experiment with the layouts, color schemes and other thengs, and can conclude which layout suits you best.
But before you need to get good traffic, directories are hard to get traffic and if they start getting traffic, they can be a profitable model even leaving out adsense.

I think Search Engines are overrated. I have my work who is a top 10 recruitment site and I run a personal top 10 film site. The traffic from Search Engines are good but nothing compared to other methods of promotion.
The recruitment site gets 1000% more traffic from other marketing methods and my film site had a huge spike when it was linked from www.fark.com and I talking 8k visitors rose to 35k from one link on Fark. Fark seems to have got there visitors from a sense of community and boobs rather than search engines.

In my experience, I did not make a lot of money until I got a pagerank 4 or higher on my directories (I have several). Once you are able to give people a link that is PR 4 on your site, they are usually willling to pay. Making money on adsense is not extremely easy, because you need sufficient traffic. It can be done, but you need to work hard to promote the directory.

I have a free directory, www.siteseek.net, that shows Google ads too. It's just starting to pay off, now that it's PR4.
Good luck on yours!

A (d) sence of direction.
I am only a PR3.
I have been working SEO on my site for just over a year. Sometimes more than others.
My seasons are very important as far as traffic goes.
SEO is starting to pay off now in a number of areas so i am starting to get traffic, enough to make Adsense to pay off.
One issue you have to consider: What is the value of potential keyword ads that google will be placing in your site?

If you wanted to look at my site, i used the advice of Google in add placement. It seems to work.
www.DoorCountyTraditions.com
I thought that it was going to show up in my last post in the sig.
I'll see if it shows up on this one.
Good luck on your new Dir!

I manage a one-stop gifts directory - http://gifts.meant4u.com/
just starting it's way up, but if you own a gifts or shopping related website ? add your site for free @ Gifts.Meant4u.com.
If you ask me the new Yahoo adsense style pr. will be better !!!

Adsense is good for low traffic or medium traffic websites. For high traffic websites, I'd think that you could get more revenue by selling your adspace directly to the advertisers.

It's a very popular humorous news/random site that has a large following and will drive a lot of traffic to any site listed on it.

Johan007 - noob here. Care to share some suggestions for non-SE methods of promotion you have used (beyond Fark)? Fark is hysterical, by the way - I'd never come across it.

This is an old thread Paul dating back to 2003! Omg wtf am I still doing here! Paul there is no easy answer to that other than provide a unique compelling service. Fark.com has really done well without SE and a huge marketing budget. Its more to do with brilliant news articles than the soft porn it also does.
If you have no money for marketing or SE traffic, you must probably offer a value service that is free just like www.fark.com and www.kontraband.com then word of mouth does the rest.
My movie site is not one of these sites becuase there are too many sites doing the same including all the top portal/ISP sites.
