Adwords isn't that tough to crack but it is difficult to stay profitable if your ad quality, CTR and landing page aren't of a certain quality. Google takes all of the above in to account when determining your minimum CPC, and if your CTR drops, your minimum CPC goes up!
The most important thing is to know how much you can afford to spend in order to acquire a customer. You may be able to afford 1 sale every 60 clicks for example and still be profitable.
Be prepared to lose money at the beginning of your campaign, you will need to tweak lots of aspects of it. If I don't register a sale after 200-300 clicks I abandon although I think quite a few people wait for 500 clicks before abandoning.
If you are new to Adwords, turn the content network off! It could get VERY costly for you.
