Buying traffic is risky, but not always bad. Just make sure the company is not selling spam, popups, popunders, or forced redirected traffic. It also must be targeted. Buying general traffic is way too broad and will not convert.

Hello,

you make very valid points. Traffic should be targeted to make sure they want to see the site they are ariving at.

How exactly do you know what kind of strategies different companies use to drive traffic?

thanks,

george

I never buy traffic. All those cars and trucks... where would I put them?

...Aaaaaand, I'm leaving this thread before people start throwing things at me.

hahaha. I would buy traffic but not random traffic. What about ezines and website banner advertising. There is more risk involved but if you use trial and error with logical thinking you should be able to bring in a nice profit.

its all about expences vs revenue. If you spend $1,000 on advertising to bring in 3,000 visitors to sell them a $50 item. If 20 of them buy, you break even. There is a good chance with ezine advertising that you can spend thousands and get only a little bit of traffic. It gets very complex and sometimes its better just to try getting organic traffic...

When you think about it, if you are advertising a sales page with an ezine ad, you are basically advertising and advertisement! thats crazy to me...

From what I have seen, the most successful on line retailers have, besides a big budget, real world advertising and marketing experience, and education.

Yes, the internet is accessable to everyone, and it is easy for anybody to get a site up, and sign up with an affiliate program, but the same rules of marketing and advertising apply, just as in the "Physical" world.

The days of just having a site and getting guaranteed traffic, are over. Now you have to work for it just like opening a new brick and mortor store.

One of the best marketers of all times, in my opinion, is Ron Popiel.
In the beginning , He advertised on a cheaper time slot, (late night T.V.)
No other advertiser thought late night was worth anything because the audience was so small, but he had the brains to figure out, "who ever was watching... will be watching me".
He made the commercials entertaining (because there was no late night entertainment), and informative (infomercials), and sold his ass off.

The same rules apply with the net. Find your target audience, no matter how small and capitolize on that. Content is king: give the buyers enough info. to not only get them interested, but to keep them satisfied, and if possible entertained, and they will buy.

I always ask new clients: "Without using your website to refer to, sell me your product, right now." A lot of them are at a loss for words.
My point being, if you cannot accomplish that simple task, to sell your product to me verbally, how do you expect to convey any credibility on your website with words?

If you have 5 potential buyers in a room, and you can't convert one of them, all the traffic in the world will not help you. You are really just relying on hope: throw enough people in the bowl and eventually someone will buy.

Everything works together, Product, Content, Presentation, Education, and Marketing. If you get those down, then you have a 50/50 shot.

Buying traffic is a waste of time and money these companies will claim that your visitors will be targeted but the truth is usually they are nothing of the sort you would be much better off spending your money on PPC or SEO.

Don't buy traffic. It is not what you think it is. People buy "Traffic" for many reasons, the main one is, to show numbers to potential advertisers, or to help out with the sale of a domain or site. (When selling to a novice or someone who doesn't understand it)

You will be better off paying for Marketing, doing SEO, and Advertising with suggested programs like Google and Yahoo.

You probably want traffic that has a chance of converting, just like everyone else, right?

Purchasing traffic, (mysterious hits to your site that seem to come from nowhere, all of a sudden) is not the way to go.

Organic Traffic is the most valued commodity on the web...why would someone sell it, instead of using it to convert and make money?
Especially at the rates that I have seen it.

Do yourself a favor, and save money and frustration...build your traffic the old fashion way:
SEO
Marketing
Advertising.

...Oh yeah, and have a product , service, and content that people actually want.

I buy traffic from the places that get traffic.
Great response. I would also ad http://adcenter.microsoft.com. Everything else is complete waste of money

PPC is good traffic. Have got acceptable results from Google, MSN and GoClick.

When I was first starting out I bought some traffic from eBay.. it was CRAP. Stay away from the "guaranteed hits" scammers and stick to PPC if you're going to buy traffic.

Buy traffic from the main players -- Google, Yahoo etc. only -- don't bother with the small fry...
