Content vs backlinks, which one is better?

if one is starting a new web site which is more important content or backlinks?

Hi, I'm brand new to the forum. Until you have at least a little content on your new site you have nothing to be "backlinked".

Develop a home page with some decent content and a few sub-pages ( or posts if you have a blog) first, and let Google index your site. Then you can pursue backlinking.

Both are important but content must be different then original or it must be rewritten only copy past is not good Backlinks are good I regularly do a tweet with full url not shortned so it will indexes at twitter and gives me backlinks for free

Both Backlinks and Quality content have there own share of importance contributing to your websites performance. In my view quality content would gain your quality backlinks as well.

Cool question, but it sounds like a trick question to me. Only a very small percentage of internet content, even good content, generates backlinks naturally. If you want people to find your content on Google and be inspired to action, both content and backlinks are equally important.

The way I started out was firstly focus on quality content that is unique and keyword rich in areas like the top, center and bottom of the page. If images are part of the content, I would use alt tag to describe the image, but toss in a keyword as well. When I was happy with that, I started working on backlinks.

Yes, they can come naturally, but it takes more time. If you want more backlinks, don't forget to put tags as to increase the chance of falling into the categories of blog catalogs you sign to. Overdoing with tags is a no-no, though.

Depends on what your goals are. Great content will get you a loyal following, traffic and (possibly) backlinks. However, proper backlinking will get you higher in the search engine results for your keywords. For maximum traffic, do both ...

brother backlink is more important....posting some standar content cause no problem...but more quality backlinks help you to get more traffic....i saw some websites that dont have proper content but they are on the first poge on google because of the backlinks

I wish this were true, but most of the time it is not. If you are a webmaster, you HAVE to build backlinks.

Write a unique, quality article. Post it to your site. Write a second unique quality article that leads into the first. Syndicate the second article to high quality article directories which link to the first on your site.

I think they go hand in hand, content rather like the products in a shop, and backlinks rather like the visitors being directed to the shop, no point having a shop without visitors and vice versa

While content is always key, I try to give both the same respect and activity. I always bring new content to my site in one tab, and in another tab I am looking for ways to get more links.

On content, just make sure it is unique content. Blog, post or add something worthy enough to read, if you have an interactive site where others can reply, ensure that the content is an attention grabber. Post about something that people can easily or that they want to respond to. Experiment with ideas and let them ride their course, nothing can really happen overnight anymore... not in this competitive website age.
