The Last Thing You’ll Ever Need to Read About Volume and Marketing – Dispelling the Volume Myth
Family, friends, fellow information seekers and question askers, please hear me. If you’re like many finding this forum, you’re looking for answers, and many times that relates to being more successful online. However, most of you chase the WRONG metric, and that is the root of your lack of success.
We live in a supersized world where everyone seems to think that bigger is better. Most guru’s tout getting millions to our websites like volume is the complete and end answer. It’s no wonder why so many mislead people come to forums like ours looking for advice because the volume isn’t working. Do they think for self and realize volume is the wrong metric when they already see it’s not working for them? No, most continue to look for ways of increasing something that they already see not working in the first place. What sense does that make? Do you really want to create even more work for yourself or would you rather change your view and target to something that actually works?
I’ve been saying this ever since I started my online come back. Yes, I’ve been online since 1996, however, from around 2005-2010, I was on hiatus. I didn’t do anything much online during that time to further my online moneymaking adventure. Therefore, if there’s one thing I’d surely wish sunk through your head and into your mind, it’s this one simple basic fact. Volume as a yardstick to measure online success, with ANYTHING but sales, is a BAD metric.
Many will wish to discredit me by pointing out that it takes volume to make sales, however, allow me to point out the flawed logic in that assumption. I offer this extreme example to illustrate the point. If I sell just one item online, that item is 5” pink pumps, and I drive millions of people to that website wanting nothing to do with 5” pink pumps, then what good did all my work do me? That’s right, it did exactly jack. Do you need more proof?
OK, how about the fact that I’ve known successful people making $500-$1000 per month on as little as 50-100 hits a day, and I’m not talking about high cost goods here either. I’ve coached a few of them, and what we did to increase that had nothing to do with driving millions of hits a day either. Why? Because we don’t need to. It’s a waste of hours spent better on other things. I’ve also known people driving thousands of hits a day that made next to nothing as well.
All of you using that volume as your yardstick, how bout some self-honesty and answer a few questions for me. How many hours do you spend daily in article submission for back links? How many hours, daily, do you spend in reciprocal linking campaigns with email? How many hours, daily, do you spend on ways simply trying to increase your website traffic? Is it getting you anywhere fast? Do you really want to spend that much time and hard work with such little returns?
The real secret isn’t volume, it’s QUALITY volume, and blindly running around obtaining links isn’t the way to get it, especially when it’s done without any clue about your target market. If you want to realize TRUE and REAL online success, you need to know your market, where they hang out, and use the tools that get your message in front of them so they’ll come to your website. Anything else is wasted time on things that may or may not get you what you want. Do yourself a favor, drop volume as a metric for ANYTHING other than sales. Even with sales, a bunch of returns or complaints will kill volume in that yardstick as well.
We all need to work smarter, not harder. I’ve mentioned this volume myth in at least two of the more recent articles on my blog. One was on email marketing, the other on article marketing. I wish you much success in your online endeavors.

A request of readers. If you see what I'm talking about and believe it, and have a twitter account, then please hit that tweet button below the original post. Help out your fellow marketers by showing them a better way, an easier way, and a way that keeps them focused on things that help them, not waste their time.

i have always thought that having more people visiting your site could lead to more sales. I have never, however, tried to get anyone to go there. I always try to get people from the subject niche to go to the site. I know I still have a long way to go, especially since I have only been at it for three months solid, I need to remember that patience is the key and that I have to keep at it.
I hope this article reaches many others and helps then re-evaluate their marketing techniques and begin to target their visitors better.
Thank you for your post, and I hope to read more about this subject I have also tweeted it for you.

You're welcome. Something like this needs to be remembered, and if I can help in any way, I will do my part..... patiently...(well I can try...)

I would have to beg to differ here, patience has never been one of my virtues. If I cannot accomplish it within a few days, my mind reels at the thought, which is why I turned to coffee..... it helps dull the patience with hyperactivity

Yeah, but be careful with hyperactivity, it sometimes stifles thought, which can be very important with what you're doing.

mmm true, I do still have to keep an eye on that brain mouth thing most days. You can tell when the coffee levels are too high when I say things pointedly and just blurt out what I'm thinking.
Luckily today isn't one of em. Its still too early yet

Somehow I don't think so, but maybe its a good idea to focus on the thread again. So that the ones that read this can learn from your wisdom and not from my ramblings.

Great minds think alike. Improving your sales funnel and increasing conversions is vastly more important than driving more traffic. If your site doesn't convert it won't matter how much traffic you send to it!
This same idea needs to be applied to Social Media. 1000 Twitter followers who are interested in what you have to offer will generate far more traffic and sales than 100,000 random Twitter followers. Every time some "expert" sells a client on X Twitter followers by X date I cringe because that leads to following those who will follow you back for the sake of following instead of building a targeted following.
TARGETED traffic and followers are key to success - not sheer numbers.
