I think that perhaps we are sometimes so hung up on trying to be like the other guys (especially our competition) that we completely forget that is not what makes us like the other guys that will bring us business. It is what makes us different. You have to have the courage to dare to be different than anyone else.

After reading the full article above (and commenting if you would like) I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Having met the Mr Peterman, I can assure you he is like no one else. Those beats are all inside his head. I was really happy when I read that he managed to buy his name back after that unfortunate business some years back. I hope he has regained his life as well.

Personally speaking, I will continue to do my own thing. I do it because I like it and want to do it. If money follows that, okay, if not I don't really care.

I am going to bump this thread with a few comments.

The first of which is that I am surprised that it has been ignored.

Everything I am going to say is public record so no revelations here. J Peterman had a very successful mail order business then he started disregarding his own mind and listened to gurus who told him how to run his business. (There is a message there for the savvy reader).

So he opened retail stores which made little or no money. That unfortunate business I mentioned above was the Chapter 7 filing where he lost the right to his own name as a business. Sadly I know of more cases than his where that has happened.

After some years he managed to buy his name back and now sells online. He may also still have a catalog.

So in many ways he is an exemplary example of a guy who never quit.

to be different in order to make business, this is not very new idea, people keep saying they need to differ from they competitor, so they carry out some strategies to be different, and this may sometimes avoid the full-face war.
