P2P (File Sharing) marketing

Does anyone here use peer to peer networks to promote their website?

Just curious.

I was going to once, but had trouble getting my torrent on suprnova back when it existed. New torrents got listed on the homepage with a link, so it may have brought in a few visitors.

Well there are several ways to manipulate the file sharing networks to display ads for your product or website. The easiest way to do this is to create audio or video ads and distribute them using popular file names (Paris Hilton, 50 Cent etc). It's easy to run a copy of Kazaa or Bear Share from your high speed connection at home and populate it with your own ads. This may not open the traffic flood gates overnight with your home PC serving files but it's a free promotion tool.

There are 60 million people using p2p apps to download music, pictures, TV shows, Movies, PDF docs and more. Advertising to these people is VERY lucrative.

The demographic is 16-24 year old males closely followed by females in the same age group. Obviously this demographic is not for everyone, if you sell knitting needles this is not your buyers group.

What is great about this group is that they are usually the "early adopters" that will use a new online service first and tell everyone else about it.

My company helps people market on a large scale by saturating ads on these networks. We currently expose our clients to millions of people each day using our network of hundreds of p2p servers and gigabits of bandwidth.

Well Brad. Your idea might sound good at first, and that is why I will tell you why it will never work for most people.

First, I have quite a few hits daily to basicus.com for searches related to BitTorrent and downloading. I currently hold the top position for the term "bittorrent trackers" in Google.

Now, you might think that it would bring in heaps of buyers to your products? Wrong.
It brings in heaps of freeriders and leechers. You know - those that ONLY want to get the free stuff - and NEVER buy anything. I have also done what you are proposing on your site. I uploaded videos and e-books, stuffed the filenames with sex-related stuff, and saw the downloading of these files explode.
Did it bring any business? No. Did I get a lot of people pissed off? Yes.

My point is that you can't fool the internet users. If you want to get them to download your oh so interesting commercial, you HAVE TO fool them to get them to download the file in the first place.

So, the idea sounds good, but it does not work.

basicus,

I am not working from an idea. I have been marketing in the p2p space for 2 years and I have the stats to prove that these are buyers.

Most sites give things away for free to attrack visitors, this does not make all the visitors free loaders.

If done PROPERLY p2p marketing can make you a fortune.

Bait and switch = total disaster.

What will you do when the BBB comes after you for FALSE advertising? If I wanted to see a 50 cent video and only saw an ad, I would get upset and make sure I NEVER buy from that company because of this.

It's bad enough that yahoo, msn give you a 30 second commercial when viewing their videos. But at least you get to see the video you wanted to see after you see their sponsored ad. That is a little more acceptable and more tolerable.

This sounds like a waste of advertising dollars. High traffic = high bandwidth costs and non targetted traffic = no sales. So paying a service to do this will only result in throwing money away. Basicus makes a very good point, most people using these tools/services are using them because they want stuff for free and have no intention of paying for anything. Why pay for it, if I can download it?

So, if anyone wants to throw money away, I'll give you my paypal account and save everyone all the hard work to give you the same results.

That's fine Brad. I was just sharing what I have experienced. I'm not claiming I am the holder of all knowledge in this or any other field.

Good luck with your business.

It all depends on what you are selling.

Some small band have seen big gains by renaming their song releases to math similar music tastes and introducing their band before the song.

It all depends on what you sell and who your market is.

Good point Brad. I did not think about bands when I commented. I guess a band could really benefit form it. Probably also an independent short-film type of project would benefit from p2p.

My point was towards websites in general, and not the kind of niche-sites.
