I don't see a problem with social promotion. As it would probably be part of SEO in the future I say that you have a good headstart.

I believe there are two kinds of Social SEO.

1st: Wherein you're actually promoting new content from your site on a regular basis. This might be new articles, promotion, changes etc.
2nd: Wherein as a web-master you've paid a 3rd party SEO to create links for you on 100's of social media sites. All the sites have the same link (or link sets)

The first manner of promotion is totally legitimate - something which is encouraged. Google never has and never will penalize this - in fact it is promoted.

The second manner of promotion is what's called dodging the system ! A lot of automated tools are available in the market, which can help create a login in 100's of social media sites around the world in a few clicks. Next, you just paste a 2 liner text with a hyperlink and press the second button to submit your posts. While this might make your link really popular in the short run - Google as well as other leading search engines have the intelligence to identify over a period of time the spam pattern of your post. Once they do identify, they'll start lowering your page rank. It might have taken you 6 months to go from rank 0 to rank 1 - but will take less than a day to bring you back to zero !

I guess, in such cases - Social SEO is bad - otherwise my friend social seo is the way to do. Remember - no cheating ... everything else will work out fine

Have in mind referral traffic as well. not only SEO if its bad for SEO and in case if it gets you traffic.. Just go ahead, there should be a trade off at any case.. at the end of the day all you need is quality traffic to your site... Social promotion can get you that traffic you need.

I use both social networking and social bookmarking for all of my websites and some days I recieve good amounts of traffic so it must be working, plus it is very easy to target relevant traffic on Facebook.

Have you signed up for a free account on OnlyWire.com which allows you to sign up to 50 social bookmarking sites and submit to them all automatically it really is a great tool. (You get 300 submissions free and can upgrade from as little as $10) Well worth taking a look at)

I think the more links on social networks the better of course you don't want to spam or appear to be promoting dodgy offers or websites but I create Facebook groups for all my websites just as a way to spread the word about my website

Obviously, social promotion cannot be bad based on the traffic you get from Twitter; except if you are doing something else wrong.

No i think social bookmaking is not bad for SEO. The social bookmarking gives you extra visitors to your site. I am also using social media for my web site.

At the contrary it is very good. Google won't punished you because you get the link from social networking.

Even if it is true that Google wont count the link from social networking there is no harm for you. The traffic will still come to your website and you won't get any penalty for it.
