I think businesses want sales in the end. But, brand is most often any business' most valuable asset. And the Internet is seen as a very cheap way to reach a very large audience.
Exposure and sales is what businesses want. It's what I want.

I think this is a good topic. The customer may in fact be wrong, but a good business will go the extra mile to service the customer and treat him/her with respect.
I recently had a hosting client who repeatedly accused us of not working correctly because he never updated his DNS to point to our servers. I could have been rude and told him off, but instead I talking him through the DNS change routine.
Then his images weren't showing because the path was to his "My Pictures" folder on his PC's hard drive. I went in and changed a few to show him how it was done.
Shortly thereafter, he decided he didn't want a website and cancelled. It doesn't matter, though, because I know we did him right. And that's what good business is all about.

I think going the extra mile for a customer will not only helps relationships with that customer but also word of mouth advertising in the future. I try to go the extra miles with my customers when I interact with them and usually they will end up sending me referal business. I think that is something that you always need to remember that one person may not be a customer but they may know someone who could be your next big client.
Small business owners know this so that is why sometimes they expect more when they request services. I know I do.
