Offering free P&P?

Is offering free P&P a good idea? I know it has its benefits as it is attractive to customers, but when you are selling items most of which are under £5 is it really a viable thing to do?
What are your thoughts?

At that price point, for a single item sale, it would only make sense to me for light items that could go first class (non-parcel) mail. Now setting a minimum amount that is slightly above your current average sale and offering free shipping at that point makes sense.

But consider that so many places offer great prices and then rip you on the p&p that free becomes a compelling offer. How much does it cost to ship your $8 item?
