SEO -- that's how you plan to promote your site right? So then what you only need to do is to follow what works with search engines' algorithms. If links matter most then you should exert more effort on it.

Build a proper network with proper SEO and when you launch a new site it will be a great deal easier for it to rank. Many just talk about doing SEO on site and off site but you need to really do your research first.

Learn your competition, learn your keywords you NEED to go after, create a plan of attack and build your business one day at a time. You do not need to do everything at once. This is why you create a business plan!

I don't consider this as the best way, but I would call it one of the simplest ways of spreading word about your site. You would certainly have contacts on your social media accounts that can help you out with spreading links to your site. Simply ask them to help you, and I bet they can really help you a lot.

I would say Facebook is the best place for promotion. First of all promote it among your friends & friends of friends. Then afterwards do the other SEO strategies, if needed.

The easiest way to get fast traffic to a new site without having to know SEO is through Social Media. Research "Social Media Dashboards" to see how you can keep your URL in front of potential visitors 24/7 through dashboards. See more about this on a blog post I did called You vs The GIANTS of Social Media

Yep, as others have stated: SEO.PPC. SMM.

Have you considered submitting news releases or story ideas to IT ezines and targeted IT magazines?

PR can be time consuming and can be costly if you try to go the 'spray and pray' route. But free if target specific magazines or ezines. You simply find their online story posting area (or email address) and send your news or story according to whatever guidelines they require.

This is not a bad way to go. You reach specific subcultures with messages that are a match fr those cultures, instead of sending stories that are guaranteed to get rejected. I used to do a lot of the 'throw enough against the barn and see what sticks' type of PR. Cost too much. Then found communicating to subcultures makes more sense. No longer do PR for others though. Downside is you've got to wait for your message to get delivered. In some cases it could be months, when dealing with slower magazine publishers. Fast when dealing with dailies and weekly publishers.

Actually joining in Internet Marketing Forums is already the first step. try looking around and read threads and articles. No one can give you a definite do's and don'ts. Research and find out on your own. Try other forums like the warriors forums of digital point. I'm sure it will help you a lot.

Great information here in this thread.

A lot of it is still very viable. You can see the trend here in all your answers that, slow and steady wins the race. You can pay for this and that, but you won't get immediate results. Nor does Google truly enjoy sites that go ape-click happy the first three months they appear then begin to curtail off.

You need to be able to come up with a strategy to address all your goals. With the newest Panda/Penguin updates, you need a huge diverse span of online marketing. This is to include all aspects, whether it's social marketing, on page SEO, link building, bookmarking ... the list goes on and on.

I'd prefer you to stay away from the adwords or any PPC campaigns until you are getting your fair share of free traffic, and you can justify the cost of the PPC campaigns, but that's just me. If you'd like to know more, or get more information, feel free to PM me.
