webmasters need to make sure that visitors return by locking them in. Encourage them to sign up for a mailing list, or RSS, or remind them to bookmark.

That is true.

It is a good idea to offer return customer discounts if/when they sign up etc as too much emphasis is put on how to draw them in and make a purchase but thats it.

Too many companies are offering incentives to new customers whilst forgetting to offer bonuses etc to their current ones.

Bad marketing strategy if you ask me.

this applies to service customers, too. I get a lot of repeat business from clients, as well as a lot of referrals. It's about creating the relationship and then from there, touching base with them in the form of emails. I send out Christmas cards to clients, as well, just to remind them that we're here
