Adwords Telesales Scam
Had a funny phone call today which I’m quite sure some of you will get the same i heard loads of them in the background, it’s a new scam going around, they rang on my mobile so I could not record them.
Anyway I had a London guy ring me today saying he was calling from Google, he went on with his pitch for about 3 minutes straight.
The scam is they, find your business sector “I’m down as Web Design” they find the information on yell.com I know this because that’s where my name is listed as web design.
Any he says web design “my region” “web design Manchester was typed in Google over 3 million times just last month” anyway at this point I knew it was a scam, I know how many times that phases gets typed and its nowhere near 3 million.
I said to him 3 million wow that could get me a lot of business, I gave him a buying signal and at this point I could tell he was clicking his heals thinking he had me too funny
So I let him carry on for a bit to be honest he sounded good I’ve done telesales and he really was confident, but the fact is it’s a scam but he was so funny “he said look I’m the guy that can make you rich all you have to do is trust me” “who wears the trousers you or the partner” and lots more hardcore sales quotes the guy was brilliant.
In a nut shell he told me he could guarantee my business on the first page of Google for the keyword “web design Manchester” I guess silly people will fall for this, I think if you read their terms they probably give you 1 click per day / month, and of course they would be sticking to their side of the agreement, but the way they sell it is they have you thinking you will be there every time that phases gets typed in, of course people hear 3 million searches, no contract, guaranteed or money back, and this could sound good.
I got down to it with him, at first I said would this be sponsored links or organic he didn’t even know what I meant, he just said you will be at the very top, then I asked the top of what google.com or something like google.ch , he then said its google.co.uk , I then asked if the sponsored links in Google work on an auction based system how can you guarantee me a place? He then transferred me to his manager, this guy introduces himself saying its john from Google, so I asked who he was and what he did at Google he got a bit aggressive with me saying am I interested or not, I just turned around and said look I know you’re a scam I have been recording the whole thing, I told him I’m adwords qualified which I am or was at one point the company I worked for made us take Google tests and every time we got it wrong we had to pay £100 out of our wage, he didn’t even know what this was, I said out of all the sectors in the world you choose to ring web development? Does this not seem silly to you?
Then he hung up
