To answer the OP:

Yes auto approve article directories work as long as you post on an article directory that is not a content farm for junk. I must disagree that all auto approve article directories have junk or will be punished by Google as stated above.

I have an auto approve article directory, course its not free either which makes a huge difference. Article marketing has not been punished by any search engine and it still works just as it did 5 years ago.

You must do article marketing the proper way though, forget about mass submit articles for backlinks. Articles are there for content to empower your website and increase your sites rankings. Use proper syndication and quality content and you will never see any punishment from any search engine.

So you rather submit to adsense filled content farms that have a PR 0 or Unranked on the article pages with far too many links and ads to pass any link juice ?
