Marketing A Forum

Hey,

What do you guys think is a good way to market a webmaster forum. I've been marketing my forum, www.webmasterhq.net/forum for a little over 2 months and its been growing pretty nicely for a new site. But I want to 'kick it up a notch' and get alot of active members also.

Let me know what you guys think I should do.

Thanks,
Ron

The first thing that you need to decide is what kind of visitors that you want to attract to your forum. Targeted marketing is much more effective than untargeted marketing. I took a short look at your forum, and it's very webmaster-centric. What kind of webmaster are you trying to attract? New ones seeking help, or experienced ones that are prone to discuss advanced topics. It would be more effective to target one at a time, although there is nothing wrong with a mixed campaign.

Once you identify who you want to target, think about what they do. What kind of resources do they need, what kind of entertainment attracts them, etc. You should give serious thought to starting a content section to add to the forum, it will give visitors something to discuss, debate, and distribute. I noticed that the "Free Webmaster Resources" and "Tutorials" sections are members only. Is there a reason why they are members only? Those two topics have the potential of drawing new webmasters to the tutorials, and experienced webmasters to the free resources. However, requiring a registration to access them will turn a lot of that traffic away; there are many other forums and websites offering those things that don't require registration.

If you post the target audience that you want, then we can probably come up with more specific ideas for you to try.

Also, I have posted a comment to your contest in this thread.

I just took a look at the CD that you offer.

I strongly advise you to read the "Marketing in an Online World" articles that I've posted about Interruption Marketing and Unsolicited Bulk Email (which has a few points that apply to pop windows as well), and to read the article that I'm going to write about pop windows. You could be doing massive amounts of damage to your brand and business by using these tools.

I'm not trying to bash you or anything of the sort. I want to make you aware of what these tools do, and I would welcome any opposing insights that you may have on these subjects.

Hi,

The site has some good programmers and people that know what their doing. Right now I think we need some n00bs that want to learn about building websites, and that ask questions.

Where do you think a good site would be to advertise, or a way to reach this audience.

Google Adwords would probably be most effective.

Start making friends, friends in the right places. Frequent every single webmastering forum out there. Stay active in the forum but dont' spam and make it obvious that you are there simply to advertise your site.

Once you can get a dozen or some very active members, you will find your forum's traffic will dramatically increase because of word of mouth.
