How to Advertise?
Hi,
I have an advertising budget of $500 to advertise my online tutor website (under construction) where you can find live teachers who will help you learn Internet related subjects (PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, ect) for as little as $100.
Anyways, I have an advertising budget of $500 to advertise my website once it is complete. How should I use this money effectively? Banner advertisements? Forum Advertisements?
Thank You,
Donny

If you go for banners first do research where you can find the right traffic, you can also do text links etc. webmaster forums could be a good start because alot op people want to learn that kind of stuff
I hope you find people that want to pay for it because there are alot of free tutorials out there
$500 is not alot though..

Thanks cashcannon . Rep added (although I don't think there will be a difference :p).
What do you think would be a good budget for advertising? Would $1000 be enough?
Thank You,
Donny

thanks for the rep! its all about the green here
but the budget thing impossible to answer. You should look at it another way, once you found right places to advertise (trial and error) you have to decide how much you wanna throw at it and for how long.
After a while you will have statistics that tell you that for example $100,- per month on this site will generate me 100 clicks then you have to choose if you want to invest more or hold on to your money for other websites.
Also make sure your site works 100% and can convert, otherwise you will be throwing away money, hope this helps!

Since you are targeting a specific niche of people that want to learn internet related technologies, then I would use a PPC program like AdWords to reach your target market.
I would start off slow and start testing to see which keywords convert the best for your site. If you not sure how to run a PPC compaign then I would suggest that you use some of that $500 to buy a good book or program that will teach you, otherwise you can blow through $500 in no time without getting any conversions (don't ask me how I know

Why not start testing by doing the "free" things first to see what works?
You might want to post to educational forums with a relevant sig file, for instance and see what signatures pull best.
Is your target audience the students or the tutors or both?
I would DEFINITELY start slow and do some free testing of
your keywords and ideas before you spend anything.
The other advice to learn more about PPC etc of course.. applies.
But do some searches to see where your target audience is already
hanging out - read their ezines, forums and so on and get your
feet wet before you dive in!
Cheers!
Lizzie

This could be entirely off - but have you thought about EBay? I see a lot of "learn to...." programs being sold on EBay at various times, also, a lot of people are trying to learn that kind of thing in order to set up a storefront etc. It could also get you some attention.
For some reason that was what came to mind when reading your budget and post. I always try interesting avenues to see what will make my clients money, and for some reason this case sounds like a possible fit.
I have never tried something like that, so if you do it, let me know how it goes.

At no cost, you could do signature advertising on The Tech FAQ Forum (or similar forums), where people who need tutoring tend to visit.

Why don't you set up a CPA affiliate program? That way your profit would cover your expenses forever.

I would avoid banner advertising and focus on your target audience. Look for forum discussions in this field, and contribute a lot always with your sig. line. You may actually find sites where your banner would be effective, but don't spend too much as banner advertising isn't really all that effective. Pay-per-click is an option too, if you try Google AdWords carefully-learn first-you might have some good sucess there. That's how I do most of my own promoting. Add AdSense to your site as well to generate some content traffic. Good luck,
Paul-Marc

I'd wait for the site for the site to be completed before you start promoting it. There is no point in getting someone to visit your site only to find out that it is under construction.
For immediate results I'd start with Adwords and/or Overture. When you start making money, you can reinvest some of the profits into other strategies, like link building building services.
Good luck!

Your site looks like something what would be good to promote offline as well. You might want to invest in some business cards and newspaper ads. To get the most out it those newspaper ads, make sure you leave them in for at least a week or longer-people need to see them a few times. Try a variety of daily/weekly papers in your area or elsewhere. Also use your signature and get involved with as many forums as possible. Good luck!
