Banner clicking rates
I paid someone to put an 88x31 banner on their site. It's small I know, but still viewable. Anyway, their stats are showing that it's been displayed 11,000 times and I've gotten 6 clicks.
yes, six.
now, I know clickthru rates aren't going to be amazing ever, but I've never bought adspace before so I'm not sure how it all works. Does this mean the placement of the banner failed miserably? Does my banner just suck? Both?
I'm clueless when it comes to marketing, I really am.

1) Does the content of their site match the idea/concept of your banner?
2) Does your banner stand out? Is it readable?
If #1 is no then that could be the REAL REASON.
My friends site gets 1000+ uniques a day and I`m lucky to see 1-2 clicks from a banner ad.. which is on every page of his site.. our contents are somewhat similiar but don't match exactly... My rate right now is 175:1 and I take it back my banner is rotated with 3...
How long did it take you to get 11,000 impressions ?
If I put your banner on one of my sites I could give you that many impressions in... 4hrs.

Hi,
Well, it depends on your targeting and your banner. I would suggest you to have other traffic types, like Popin Ads, or Banner Popunders. I know that for Popin Ads, the click through rate is around 5% and banner popunder is around 2-3%. You can have target market to it too. For example, if you are selling something in English, then you can target it english only, which should be more effective.

The fact of the matter is that nobody clicks on banners any more. If you want click throughs all other things being equal, buy text links.
Google's AdSense ads which get a 3% to 5% click through rate are all text ads. Do you think this is an accident? Google could do great banners, but they don't because they don't work.

I don't get anywhere near 3-5% and I run adsense on about 5 sites. Which combined receive almost 1k Uniques a day.
I run a bottom banner from FastClick and get almost identical click-through rates as I do wtih AdSense. ANd I only run this on 2 sites ~500uniques a day.
I make more $$ with google however since it is "targeted".

You have my condoelence. I run AdSense on two or three sites and about 50 pages in total. I have been running them since July 8 2003. My all time click through rate is 2.3 %. But I commonly have days that exceed 5%.

Start here http://www.compar.com/infopool/index.html and then look at any article in the InfoPool. They are all towards the bottom on the left hand side. I have always figured we would do better if we moved them higher on the page.

Some of the articles had NPO's and not the ads...

What is a NPO. I'm terrible on anagram. I think it must be my dyslexia.
I just checked the first 10 articles and they all displayed AdSense ads?????

NPO = Non Profit Organization.
My site displayed AdSense ad's for a friend too, I wonder if AdSense is having a problem today.. I made up some money but am about 50% off of what I average in a day..
Those fastclick banners at the bottom pay for 1/2 my server just from that one site, so people "DO" click on them but you don't make NEAR as much as you do with adsense...

Could be both. Could just be that banner advertising (particularly if totally untargeted) sucks. CTRs of around 0.1% and often less are commonplace.

Banners are often not extremely relevant to the content at hand. Take the banner ads on www.pregnancylounge.com for example. The banner ad is generally relevant, but not specifically relevant to the topic being on hand.
Thaose banners get a horrible CLT ratio. The Adsense on the other hand tends to show ads dealing specifically with the topic on hand, and get something like 1% CTR.

I agree with JohnScott - plus even if a banner is relevant - it is pretty much the same on every refresh on most sites. With AdSense, you have many relevant links that change as you refresh.

That's an excellent point. I had never really though of it before. But it may contribute a great deal to the apparent high CTR.
Of course if you were serving all your banner ads off your own server you could also rotate them. I just think people have become completely inured of banners.

Anyone else notice how adsense ads seem to stay/rotate the same.. I get about 3 of the same no matter what, and on a 2 banner board it kind of forces my CTR down because not many ppl wanna goto the same place 2x...

That's why is way to change the way of advertising. Why did banner work? It's an image, not only text. It's more attractive and more effective.
I would believe you have some advertising methods, like Popunder, Popin Ads can bring you much higher CTR. If you have an attractive banner, you surely don't need to worry about the CTR.
I have seen 13% of CTR for Popin Ads. This is surprising. Well, you just can't argue with the fact.

At the end of the day, even CTRs are meaningless. It's the money that's spent IF someone clicks that's the bottom line.
13% for pop-ins isn't necessarily an inidcation of success. Many pop-in ads don't have an obvious 'close' button or appear without notice and are accidentally clicked on.
