This is to share with you the results of a test about the effectiveness of a tell-a-friend button placed on a web site and collect from you information about the results you might have got with similar tools.
The test has been done in two steps using two identical tell-a-friend buttons adding, to the second one, a reward opportunity on it.
With the first step we did place a normal tell-a-friend button without any reference to a reward, then, using an op-in email provider, we did run an email campaign. Result: none of the visitors, obtained via the email campaign, did click on the tell-a-friend button.
With the second step we did introduce a reference to a $500 reward within the tell-a-friend button and run the same email campaign. This time, 4.7% of the visitors did use the tell-a-friend button. After that 28.3% of the people receiving the referral email did visit the web site.
This means a traffic gain of 4.7%*28.3%=1.3% to be compared with 0% of the previous test.
