Adsense and perception of your site

Just blogged about my 2c on how I view Adsense on a site - what's your thoughts? I don't usually start new threads on stuff I blog about, but I just had a look at the banner ads up the top of v7n forums and couldn't help thinking what a negative opinion I'd have of the forums if there had been Adsense up there instead.

IMO, banner ads (that are appropriate and well designed) help bring out a page more than Adsense does.

Do you think Adsense is starting to feel a little...ugly (on some sites)? Personally I think Google screwed up and really should have implemented some publisher quality control from day 1.

Hi John,

From your blog post:

"Perhaps if Google set out and actually implemented some quality control (you know - like they constantly preach to webmasters about linking…) "

Totally agree - and I always find it puzzling when I come across sites that are obviously heavily penalized or even banned from Google with gobs of AdSense on them. So Google is saying "this is a poor quality site, we don't want you in our SERPs" on the one hand, yet also saying "you're good enough for our advertisers and to represent the Google brand" on the other.

I agree, I don't like sites that are covered with adsense ads, but if the ads are blended or implemented nicely, I have not problem with it. What drives me nuts is when I hear people say, "I want to build an adsense site, what are some top paying keywords?" UGH!!

I know of many people that make a lot more than $100 a month with adsense so I would say it is well worth it to them. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.....yet.

I think that when adsense was new it didn't look so bad. I'm mean it was a lot nicer form of advertising then the Flash-based-punch the monkey style banners ads all over. But, now it's being used on so many worthless sites that It has lost much of it's appeal.
