Do you think a website using MediaWiki could be created that could be used for people to advertise things to sell or rent (in the case of houses etc?) for free.

Sounds perfectly feasible. You would probably have to limit editing to logins to make sure its not all spam. Would you want to charge for the service?

I was thinking of getting money from adsense/banners, and of course registration (with email) only... with the added clause of them having a choice to opt out of targetting marketing (another revenue option)

Their User pages' could be used as containers for Contact addresses etc, as well as a list of items that they have added.

I see, you want to make a sort of craigs list type thing with a wikipage..

Wikis allow pictures too, and custom built categories.
