Do you pay for having your site listed in a directory?
There are lot directories requiring you to pay to list your site; how many of you pay for that?
What makes you decide to invest in such listing?

I haven't paid anything yet. But when I'm done with the 3000 free I know I might consider it.

Clearly, a lot of people pay to have their site listed in directories.

Hi,
I pay for having my site listed on directories, why?
I am listing my site on free and pay directories for different reasons.
Some directories owner offer free listing for a short time, so this is an opportunity to get listed, and they need a lot of quality websites if they are serious about their business. My preferences are for nice designed, with no ads, or very light advertising.
When I pay for directories, it depends of my own ratio:
PR/design/traffic/prices
design/traffic
PR/traffic
nice design/prices
So basically, it depends. I like to mix different kind.
Very important for me when I paid good money for a link, I check not the PR on the directory index, but the PR on the category I wish to be listed.
I don't like to login on directories because this is hard to keep all the usernames and paswords for all, particulary when we are talking about hundred's.
This is my point of view from an e-commerce owner like me.
Interesting thread,
Thanks

Paid directories have the potential to be stronger, as there is a revenue stream the owner can use to invest in the directory. So, a listing in a paid directory will often be more helpful than in a free one.

Going for both of them together would be the best option.

Interesting stuff, I tried the tool with my dir and obtained a 4
And I want to say as long as it's not 6 I would not pay for a common dir. listing; I will not ask you to pay for a listing in my dir. before I get 6 though

I agree with Aviva and Vistadivine. There is no secret a directory owner need to make money to promote his directory. Free directory for a short period of the time is a very nice offer from directories owners (I thank them to list my site), then when the directory start to generate some traffic and get stronger payment is necessary for a healthy directory.

I pay to submit. The paid directories tend to be the better quality ones.

Now i'm really confused,
just looked at the 2 directories that ritchie has recommended, the first site has a PR 0
adn the second site has a PR of 7 but the page i would submit to is a PR0.
so would i be paying to submit to a PR 7 site or the inner pages of PR0.

Don't get too obsessed with PR.

You say don't get too obsessed with PR, but is that not what gives you traffic and high search engine rankings

No. Links give me traffic, and promotion does, but the links you want to look for are relevant, trusted links.
Toolbar PR is mostly for entertainment purposes.
